Burgeon Athlete: Abishai Corey

Abishai wrote a blog post detailing her ski racing career and why she reached out to Burgeon for sponsorship. We are excited to have her on Team Burgeon!

My name is Abishai Corey and I’m 16 years old. I was born in Maine, lived there for the first six years of my life, and then moved to Lincoln NH, where I still am today.

I started skiing when I was just three years old at Sugarloaf as well as a local ski hill in Maine called Ticomb. I began racing when I was eight on Loon Race Team as well as the Lin-Wood School's team. This was where I took my first big racing steps. With all the training and races every week I was able to get more comfortable at the starting gate. I learned to race at both programs for six years before moving to Waterville Valley Academy where I began racing full-time. I've now been at WVA for three years.

This year is my first year as a FIS athlete and it has taken me further than I ever expected. I was invited to ski in a Nor-Am race in Colorado to start my season. The Nor-Am level is the last level before the World Cup which is a big deal in the ski racing world. I raced among US Ski Team athletes and FIS girls 16 and older. I raced another Speed Nor-Am at Burke. Unexpectedly, I placed 15th and 9th, scoring 45 Nor-Am Points qualifying me for U18 Nationals and Nor-Am Finals!

Thankfully U18 Nationals are at Cannon which means little travel, however, Nor-Am Finals are in British Colombia, Canada... a much further and more expensive trip than the drive to Cannon. This is one of the reasons I reached out to Burgeon for sponsorship.

I qualified for events that earlier in the season I hadn't expected to make! Also, I was very inspired by this new company, especially the fact that they are local. I value local sponsors, and I wanted them to be a part of my ski racing team. So I reached out to Burgeon and was honored to be accepted onto the Burgeon Outdoor Athlete Team.

Many people believe a ski racing athletes season is over once the snow melts, but in reality, it’s just the beginning of working out and being prepared for the next season. Thank you Burgeon for having me be a part of your team and I’m excited to work with you guys!
