Excellent mid-layer piece: warm and breathable. This makes it really good for start/stop in chill weather, since it doesn't get sweated out. It has remarkable wind resistance, too, and will shed some light snow. However, pushing through overgrown trails isn't kind to the exposed stitching, so you'll definitely want a shell in those situations.
At 6'3" and 200lb the large tall is perfect, but the fabric and construction give a lot of latitude in the fit; it contours over the body without hanging loose or constricting like some form-fitting pieces. Also means it looks sharp as a town piece.
The bottom line though it is just feels fantastic to wear, cozy and even snuggly.
I got it yesterday and wore it in the cool morning and it felt like tailor-made. Then it got warm and the breathable nature of the garment made it comfortable in the sun in the upper 70s. The Franconia is the best made piece I've seen. Every stitch, seam and zipper is flawless. The hood is also a great feature and the built in balaclava is quite ingenious.
Burgeon's commitment to the community by switching much of their production to sewing face masks for vulnerable groups in the midst of the pandemic is praise-worthy. They have my admiration.
I love my Franconia! On a hike this past winter, I was raving about it to one of my regular White Mountain hiking friends. I love the slim fit and the stretch to the jacket - very comfortable. It’s super breathable and this past winter I was able to wear it on super cold days and relatively mild days, venting with the full front zipper. The hood with built in face mask is a great feature and I was able to use that instead of a balaclava or buff. The thumb holes also worked really well for me. They fit snuggly and I frequently used them over my glove liners instead of adding a heavier glove. To top it all off, it's made locally!
First time, I wore this I knew it was awesome. Hugs your body without being restrictive, keeps you warm without bulk. First time was to ski however, I now wear it almost daily, love the pockets and details! It washes well also. Just love it!
I used the Franconia a lot this winter here in western Montana. This piece is super comfortable. It worked really well as layer when skiing, hiking and trail running. I have enjoyed the extras such as the secret neck warmer that is built into the hood and the thumb holes at the end of the sleeves. I plan to use this in the spring/summer months as an outer layer. Really loving it.
